The Way We Worked: Photographs from the National Archives

Children doing difficult jobs, such as those at this mill, led to calls for reform in the 20th century. Social reformers have long used photographs like this as evidence to ban child labor, reduce the hours that women could work, and expose unsanitary workplaces.
