Responding to the success of the popular philately-themed exhibitions The Art of the Stamp and The Graceful Envelope, SITES is proud to announce the addition of Trailblazers & Trendsetters to our exhibition portfolio. Seventy-six original works of art by more than 40 artists provide a vibrant glimpse of American icons and achievements in literature, arts and entertainment, history and exploration, transportation, and sports. Informative text accompany subjects as diverse as Emily Dickinson, Marian Anderson, space exploration, the paddlewheel steamer, and World Cup soccer.
Commissioned by the U.S. Postal Service and spanning the years 1967 to 2006, the featured artwork are executed in a range of media, including watercolor, photography, and black-and-white scratchboard. Six cases featuring sports, the Lewis and Clark bicentennial, Mickey Mouse, merengue dancing, classic films, and scratchboard illustrations explore in greater depth various aspects of selecting and designing “America’s calling cards.”
Trailblazers & Trendsetters is on view at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum through June 2008.
